Upon returning from the Black Student-Athlete Summit, the attendees reflected on their experience and decided to share their takeaways. We also made a preliminary proposal for what would eventually be developed into the Black Triton Association, an affinity group focused on connecting and supporting Black scholar-athletes at UC San Diego.
By the end of the Summer of 2022, the founders of the Black Triton Association had gathered information about current Black scholar-athletes at UC San Diego and reached out to them to share this opportunity. Through these efforts, we encouraged over 50 attendees to commemorate the founding of this organization at the inaugural Black Triton Welcome during the second week of the Fall Quarter.
Throughout the course of the year, the Black Triton Association held events to bring members together, creating a safe space for community and celebrating holidays like the New Year and Black History Month.
Where the Black Triton Association made an even greater impact was with the development of its social media presence via Instagram. Still, to this day, the organization increases the visibility of Black scholar-athletes at UC San Diego, who make up less than 10% of the scholar-athletes, by sharing their accomplishments and opportunities to support them at games and events. Many followers of the Instagram account are family members who cannot watch their athletes compete, so the Black Triton Association creates a unique opportunity to stay up to date, no matter where the fans are.
